Abstract:
The Montana Schools Database is comprised of public and private schools within the state of Montana. This includes colleges and universities.

The overall source for the school information came from the Directory of Montana Schools 2003-2004, published by the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI). FEMA HAZUS data was used for school attributes. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was used for positional data. The FEMA data source is derived from the National Center for Education Statistics with address range geocoding applied to derive positions. Other miscellaneous sources included the internet: whitepages.com, yellowpages.com, privatebug.org, myaasite.com/programs/schools/county, and greatschools.net/modperl/bycity/mt.

The layer was modified in 2015 to change the values in the Name and Address fields from all upper case to upper and lower case. Several time-sensitive fields with contact information for the school administrator were removed.

Data set credit:
Creation of this data was made possible through funding from the Montana Homeland Security Taskforce GIS Subcommittee. The database was created by the Montana Base Map Service Center with assistance from the Montana USGS Mapping Partnership Office in Bozeman. Certain existing data from the GNIS and Hazus databases were used to intially populate the database

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Attributes were primarily compiled from phone calls, websites, HAZUS, or existing tabular data from the Office of Public Instruction and can be assumed accurate within the bounds of those sources. Attributes such as contact names and phone numbers will change and will require maintenance
Quantitative attribute accuracy assessment:
Attribute accuracy value: untested
Attribute accuracy explanation:
The attribute accuracy has not undergone any statistical tests

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
untested - points have been moved from original GNIS locations to those of existing aerial imagery if they could be identified
Quantitative horizontal positional accuracy assessment:
Horizontal positional accuracy value: untested

In certain cases like Yellowstone County, GIS datasets were used to confirm or relocate the spatial positions in GNIS

Process step:
The overall source for the school information came from the Directory of Montana Schools 2003-2004, published by the Montana Office of Public Instruction. FEMA HAZUS data was used for school attributes. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was used for positional data. Other miscellaneous sources included the internet: whitepages.com, yellowpages.com, privatebug.org, myaasite.com/programs/schools/county, and greatschools.net/modperl/bycity/mt. Locations of the schools were moved from the original GNIS locations to identifiable locations on digital orthorectified images, or when that wasn't feasible moved into identifiable parcels from the Montana Cadastral Database. Further spatial adjustment will take place as high resolution imagery is available
